Questions:

At what age did you begin to study karate?
At age 35 I began studying Uechi-Ryu Karate under the instruction of Sensei Ed Oakley.

Why did you choose to study karate?
Being a big supporter of my children’s education, I purchased a karate certificate that Sensei Ed donated to the school auction. I have always wanted to learn self-defense to protect my family and myself if the need ever presented itself.

Was there a reason you studied Uechi Ryu?
I like this style for my children and myself – the hard and soft form is a good fit for my personality.

What does this tour to Okinawa mean to you?
This is a trip of a lifetime for me. It is a wonderful opportunity to travel ½ way around the world to a far away beautiful country – where this style of karate originated. The education and training will bring this way of life into full perspective for me. The camaraderie with our team and with the other woman we meet will make for a lifetime of memories. I’m looking forward to having a lot of fun…sight seeing, taking pictures, etc…taking in all I can. Then bringing the experience back with me to share and to set new goals for myself with clearer picture.

How has your Martial arts study affected or changed your life?
It gives me something to look forward to that I can do for myself. The benefits have been a huge stress relief and a great way to get in shape again after children. It has been exciting for me to accomplish something and I enjoy the challenge. My goal is to continue my studies in karate and learn the many facets involved in the system.
