Biography

Sharon was a late bloomer in regards to studying Uechi Ryu Karate. Not being shy about new challenges, at the age of 52 she entered the dojo for the first time. She was amazed at how the exercises and katas flowed together so fluidly. She was particularly impressed with what she saw and felt when the students did their katas.  She couldn’t help but wonder if she would ever be able to combine the disciplines of spirit, mind and body. Through the combination of personal courage, encouragement from others and dedication to her training, at age 53, Sharon reached the milestone of green belt (Gokyu).  She now feels very much a part of the dojo. Sharon is very proud of her accomplishments.  The inner strength, courage and peace she realizes is a direct result of her training.  Sharon is a veteran teacher, who presently has a career in Radio Production and Real Estate.  She is very excited and honored to be a member of the Women’s Okinawan Friendship Tour, believing that something like this happens once a lifetime- if you are fortunate.  She wouldn’t miss it for the world and looks forward to representing her dojo, as one of the junior women in regards to rank.

Questions

At what age did you begin to study karate?

52 years old.

Why did you choose to study karate?

I was invited by my sensei, Robert Otto, to join his dojo. Being a single female and knowing very little about self-defense, I decided to accept his invitation.

Was there a reason why you chose to study Uechi Ryu?

Knowing very little about the different styles of karate, I honestly just fell into the Uechi Ryu Karate Do, at the invitation of my sensei. Since becoming a practitioner of Uechi Ryu, the value of this defensive system has become obvious - the blending of the mind, spirit and body to move together as one in an aggressive situation.

What does the tour to Okinawa mean to you?

To be a part of the Women’s Okinawan Friendship Tour is to be a part of history.  Progress is made with small steps. This tour is the first step of its kind, ever.  I am proud and excited to train where my karate style began, connecting the past with the present, and to be with an assemblage of women who are of like-mind.

How has your martial arts study affected or changed your life?

Studying Uechi Ryu Karate has given me mental and physical strength and an inner peace that comes from knowing that if I had to defend myself I could and I could do it well.
