Biography

Tonia has always been interested in Karate, but never really thought she could succeed at it.  After deciding to finally do it, she realized how challenging and fun Uechi-Ryu was.  Tonia is a stay at home mom and has 2 daughters, Taylor 5 and Morgan just turned 3.  Her husband is Wayne who is full time stock trader at home.  So she has her hands full on the home front.  She has a small stain glass business at home where she makes custom stain glass items such as windows, lamps, sun catchers, and figurines.  Starting at the age of 6 she has played on 3 championship softball teams.  Currently she plays in a co-ed league in Massachusetts on Sunday mornings.  She has been on this team for 8 years and counting.  Tonia is a fanatic about her lawn and flower gardens.  She spends many hours  keeping her yard looking great.  With the support of her husband and the challenges of raising 2 small children, she still manages to train at the Dojo 3 times a week.

Questions:

At what age did you begin to study karate?

30

Why did you choose to study karate?

Better physical fitness and a challenge

Was there a reason why you chose to study Uechi Ryu?

It looked very interesting compared with other types of Karate.

What does this tour to Okinawa mean to you?

This is a chance of a lifetime to visit another country and culture.  Also I am excited to meet other women with similar interests and train in the place where Uechi-Ryu was originated.  I am looking forward to having fun with my fellow Uechi-Ryu women, and to bring back new goals for myself and try to pass on everything I learn to my daughters Taylor and Morgan.

How has your martial arts study affected or changed your life?

Yes it has given me more confidence in myself as well as helps me to get in better shape physically.  I enjoy being part of an organization with so many nice people who share the same goals.  As a full time house wife, it gives me something that I can do for myself.
